Admit it, you love the cats and dogs featured on the ever popular
YouTube. Who wouldn’t go crazy gaga over these cute and adorable darlings? Not
to mention, funny baby videos or stupid pranks shown for the world to see.
While it’s true that these videos have gone viral overnight, most of us know
that today, YouTube is much, much more than that.
YouTube entails everything from hundreds of featured films to web celebrities to a community that surrounds pretty much anything you can think of. Many of these video uploads has garnered over thousands and even millions of YouTube views instantly, all because they were able to go viral.
And so, along with the changing landscape of YouTube comes into question…Is the notion still true that videos must be super-short, no longer than two minutes long, especially for them to go viral? What is important for viral success? Here are some tips when it comes to learning the trade of becoming a viral success.
While getting to the point and becoming clear and concise is still very close, videos go viral all the time now that range from 10 minutes to 30 minutes. Remember the Stop KONY campaign not long ago? Yes, it was that long and it had actually earned a very high audience retention score.
It could be because of the message that it had portrayed, but there are a lot of other campaigns that are getting lackluster results.
Thanks to the progression of online video, people are becoming more used to watching long-form content on the web. One example is Hulu, which has pushed forward for longer lengths in video. YouTube too has been pushing this forward by offering movies and removing the old 10 minute limit (now 15 minutes for non-partners) on video uploads.
So for content creators, here are some tips regarding viral content: Long-form or Short-form?
